As I approach the one-year anniversary in my role as CEO, I wanted to reflect on what an extraordinary year this has been for the Joan Mitchell Foundation — a year of substantial transition, of tremendous collective effort, of challenges and accomplishments, and of exciting new beginnings in mapping our future. Direct support to visual artists is central to the Foundation’s mission. When Joan Mitchell established the Foundation in her will, she was specific in her desire to have the organization aid visual artists. We are honored and fortunate to be able to prioritize unrestricted funding to artists, and in 2015, we are thrilled to be sharing our newest initiative, the Emerging Artist Grant Program. In announcing this new program, we see an opportunity to share our internal thought processes and the conversations we continue to have with our staff and Board. Two questions in particular have guided the development of our programming. First, how do artists’ needs change over their lifetime? Second, given the Foundation’s values of inclusivity and cultural equity, how do we ensure that we are supporting a broad spectrum of artists and living our values? Read more.

Welcome to spring. This year brings a lot of new developments at the Joan Mitchell Foundation. As many of you know, I was invited by the Board of Directors to return to the Foundation in the new role of Chief Executive Officer, starting in January. I am very honored by the opportunity to further shape the Foundation’s vision and to be working again with this extraordinary team of people, both the Board and staff. The Joan Mitchell Foundation has grown tremendously over the years, thanks to the broad vision of the Board of Directors, our previous director Carolyn Somers, the dedication of an amazing staff and the growing public recognition of the important role Joan played as an artist. 

We believe there is no other arts organization that works so completely and deeply to support such a diversity of visual artists. Read more.

The Foundation’s Legacy department has a wonderful and growing collection of primary and secondary source materials that document Joan Mitchell’s life and work, and a particularly rich part of our archives are several of Joan Mitchell’s sketchbooks. The Foundation is pleased to be presenting sketchbooks dating from Mitchell’s student years through the end of her life this summer and fall in exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria and the Museum Ludwig, Germany.
