My painting practice shows a system based on looking, walking, time, the function of memory, mimesis, and how these ideas relate to the tradition of painting. Walking in urban and natural environments becomes a vehicle for focus and observation. The everyday experience of noticing informs my process of making. I have created strategies for making paintings out of the act of recalling visual observations from everyday experience, from paintings and three-dimensional constructions that I have made, as well as from modern/contemporary paintings that I have seen. Time, color, and material constraints control this process, but arriving at a painting/construction is more important than the finished product. I make drawings, paintings, painted constructions, and installations that become the visual language that generates subsequent work.”
