Painters & Sculptors Grant, 2017
In my work I create a community and take the viewer on a tour of the neighborhood. The viewer becomes an unknown visitor who interacts with the characters. The visitor gets the gaze of the characters as they enter moments of play, of people strolling down the street or hanging in the parking lot. Throughout the scenes I question the power dynamics that play out in the relationships: who is the protégé, who is the protégé, how do you establish authentic connections, how do you avoid them?”
