About Cecelia Fernandes

Cecelia Fernandes is a multimedia artist and New Orleans native. In her creative practice, she cuts photographic prints to form woven diptychs, which are pinned in place and flow over a surface. The photographs that she uses as raw materials come from many years spent capturing the experience of community and daily life in Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States with her husband, the photographer Jose Fernandes. Cecelia Fernandes has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions at venues throughout New Orleans, including New Orleans Art Center, Eight One Eight Gallery, Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans, and Hyphen Gallery.

As a Native of New Orleans, 6th generation, my life is rooted in the Black Creole community and its public rituals. They formed me and gave me a strong sense of self and of the power of my cultural history.”
