Middle School Portfolio Preparation

Please note: Joan Mitchell Foundation is not currently offering any studio or portfolio development classes. Through the end of 2017, the Foundation is focusing on research and piloting innovative educational opportunities for the artist community. We look forward to sharing the new education model with you in 2018.

For those families looking for new art program opportunities, we have created a comprehensive resource directory of various ongoing youth art programs and opportunities in the NYC area. The free booklet is available to download here.

This workshop series was specifically designed for students who planned to apply to the New York City high schools that specialize in the arts. The workshops provided an overview of the schools and individualized assessments of student portfolios. Participants had the opportunity to hone their interviewing and communication skills, while strengthening their portfolios through drawing assignments and how-to demonstrations. These sessions took place annually in September and October.

In partnership with the Museum of Arts and Design, Student Opportunities and Support has produced a booklet to help prepare students and parents for applying to NYC Specialized Art High Schools. The booklet includes important dates, information on how to prepare for auditions, tips on how to build a portfolio, samples of successful student portfolios, and more. The resource booklet is available for download on our Resources page.
