NEW ORLEANS - The Joan Mitchell Center on Bayou Road is pleased to announce the ten (10) artists selected for the 2013-2014 New Orleans Local Artists (“NOLA”) Studio Program:
Carl Joe Williams
The Joan Mitchell Center is piloting a year-long program for ten New Orleans-based visual artists beginning November 4, 2013. Artists will receive a free studio and a materials stipend for five months, as well as professional development support over the full length of the pilot.
This program is being developed to support the artistic careers of emerging painters and sculptors whose work exhibits exceptional potential and who have demonstrated a need for a dedicated professional workspace.
Representing a diversity of artistic practices and media, all ten artists share a passion for New Orleans and a strong commitment to their own communities, as well as to the contemporary arts scene in the city.
Finalists were selected from a pool of artists nominated by members of the New Orleans arts and cultural community. Images of the candidates' artwork were viewed for consideration through an anonymous process by a jury panel in early fall, and all nominees then participated in interviews with Joan Mitchell Center and Foundation staff to discuss firsthand their need for a workspace and professional development support.
ABOUT THE JOAN MITCHELL CENTER
The core program of the Center is an artist in residence program, which offers both time and space for artists to create work in a contemplative environment, as well as provides opportunities for visiting artists to engage with the local arts community and experience the rich cultural possibilities of New Orleans.
Based in the culturally diverse and historic city of New Orleans, the Joan Mitchell Center’s mission is to support local, national, and international contemporary visual artists. Developed by the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the Center aspires to be a place for creation, innovation, and transformation; supporting values of community, diversity and social equity; providing a forum for artists and to be a welcoming, inclusive gathering place for the arts and the broader community of New Orleans.
Throughout the 2013-2014 New Orleans Local Artists Studio Program pilot, the Joan Mitchell Center will host Open Studios and Artists Talks to provide opportunities for artists to engage with members of the arts community and the general public.
