  1. 2002–04

    Monograph co-published by the Whitney Museum and the University of California Press, "The Paintings of Joan Mitchell".


    The Whitney Museum of American Art presents a retrospective, “The Paintings of Joan Mitchell.”  The exhibition travels to the Birmingham Museum of Art, Alabama, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, and the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa. An accompanying monograph, with essays by Jane Livingston, Linda Nochlin, and Yvette Y. Lee, is co-published by the Whitney Museum and the University of California Press. Concurrent with the retrospective in New York are exhibitions at Cheim & Read, Tibor di Nagy and Lennon Weinberg.

  2. 2005

    Self-portrait (c. 1951) by Mitchell, exhibited at Francis M. Naumann Gallery.


    Cheim & Read presents “Frémicourt Paintings 1960–62,” accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by Klaus Kertess. Francis M. Naumann, New York, shows "Joan Mitchell Sketchbook 1941–51." Susan Sheehan Gallery, New York, shows “Prints from the Foundation.”

  3. 2006

    Invitation for exhibition at Kukje Gallery, featuring "Untitled", 1961.


    Kukje Gallery, Seoul, Korea presents the first major exhibition of Mitchell’s work there. San Francisco’s de Young Museum presents a solo exhibition of her work.

  4. 2007

    "Tilleul" (1977) and "Untitled" (1983)  installed at Cheim & Read.


    Cheim & Read and Steidl publish “Joan Mitchell: Works on Paper 1956–1992,” with an essay by John Yau, to accompany an exhibition at the gallery. Hauser & Wirth London shows “Joan Mitchell, Leaving America,” an exhibition of Mitchell’s work from 1958 to 1964.

  5. 2008–09

    "Sunflowers" published by Cheim & Read.


    The Kunsthalle in Emden presents the first solo exhibition of Mitchell’s work in Germany. The show travels to the Palazzo Magnani, Reggio Emilia, Italy and the Musée des Impressionismes, Giverny, France.

    November 2008. Cheim & Read shows “Sunflowers,” an exhibition of paintings, prints and pastels accompanied by a catalogue, with an essay by Dave Hickey, co-published by Steidl.

  6. 2009

    Hauser & Wirth Zürich presents “Sunflowers,” Mitchell’s first solo exhibition in Switzerland since 1962. An exhibition of works on paper, “Drawings,” is shown at Kukje Gallery.
