About This Work
The title of this quadriptych references the end of Mitchell's relationship with Canadian painter Jean Paul Riopelle, whose nickname for her was Rosa Malheur. After meeting Riopelle in 1955, Mitchell wrote to a friend: "La vie en rose begins"—a witty reference to Edith Piaf, whom Mitchell adored.
