Nik Richard is an illustrator, poet, and urban planner from New Orleans, LA. He holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree from The University of New Orleans. His work falls at the intersection of telling poetry through still images, and narrating the history of his city through temporary and permanent public artwork installations. Using his experience as an artist and urban planner, Nik is constantly exploring ways to use his artwork as ways of empowering residents and neighborhoods in New Orleans to amplify the history of their spaces, and to reclaim their influence of the urban landscape.
Joan Mitchell Center Residency, 2021
As an illustrator, my creative process focuses on telling stories through images. My sketchbook is full of renderings and ideas that I can pull from at any time to produce a final piece of artwork. I try not to work directly from one photograph to create an illustration, so I collage different pictures on my iPad or computer, and then use that collage as a reference for the final drawing.”
