Working across a variety of media, Katy Schimert uses fragments of personal experience as conceptual impetus. The intersection of the fine and decorative arts is a formal point of departure for the artist. Densely layered, her work suggests sequences of cosmic events occasionally populated by ethereal human figures. Schimert has participated in exhibitions since the early 1990s. Venues include a solo exhibition and catalogue, Camouflage, Ink and Silence, at the University Museum of Contemporary Art, UMass Amherst; and group exhibitions at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York; and The Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. Her work is featured in public collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Wanås Foundation, Knislinge, Sweden; and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

My practice alternates between sculpture and drawing, allowing each medium to inform and influence the other. I start each project with an iconic cultural image. Through drawing, I am able to force the form of sculpture to fluctuate into shifting narratives.”
