Painters & Sculptors Program 2018 Cindy Cheng
Originally from Hong Kong, Cindy Cheng is an artist working in Baltimore, MD. Rooted in the practice of drawing, she explores the relationship between drawings and objects through complex constructions. Cindy likes thinking about how built structures or lived environments may act as a projection of one’s aspirations, ideals, and understanding of self. She has been a resident at the Vermont Studio Center and at Anderson Ranch. In 2017, she received the Sondheim Artscape Award and won second place at the Trawick Prize. She has participated in solo and two-person shows at School 33 Art Center (Baltimore, MD), Fjord Gallery (Philadelphia, PA), Ditch Projects (Eugene, OR), St Charles Projects (Baltimore, MD), and Sindikit Project (Baltimore, MD). Cindy received a BA from Mount Holyoke College, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and an MFA from MICA's Mount Royal School of Art.
“I use a formalist language to create incubators that reflect on my personal history and reveal new perspectives on self. I am taking a close look at the experience of being a Chinese woman living between North America and Hong Kong who came of age in the 80s in a family of contrasts—one that both respected slippery traditions and embraced Western pop culture.”
