Suzanne Jackson (b.1944) has had a distinguished career as a painter, poet, costume and scenic designer, and dancer. She holds a BA in Art from San Francisco State University and an MFA in Design from Yale University School of Drama. Her work is included in public and private collections, including the Getty Archives and the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Recent exhibitions include Suzanne Jackson at Ortuzar Projects, New York (2019); Suzanne Jackson: Five Decades, Jepson Center/Telfair Museums, Savannah, GA (2019); holding on to a sound, O-Town House, Los Angeles (2019); Life Model: Charles White and His Students, LACMA, Los Angeles (2019); West-By-Midwest, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (2018); Soul of A Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, Brooklyn Museum (2018); Pacific Standard Time, Art in Los Angeles 1960-1980; and Now Dig This! My imagined improvisations emerge into painted color and textural abstractions in the spirit of nature, lyrically referenced and heard in all music. My paintings recognize ancestral traditions that continue to reverberate as evidence in our transitioning American retentions–powerful legacies that originated in the southern entry regions of the African American and Indigenous experiences.”
