Pamela Council brings to light under-examined narratives through sculpture, installation, invention, intervention, printed matter, writing, jokes, style, and performance. Pamela has created commissions for Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and The Studio Museum in Harlem. Her work has been featured at Williams College Museum of Art, African American Museum of Philadelphia, Houston Museum of African-American Culture, VOLTA, and MoCADA. She earned a BA from Williams College, where, as a native New Yorker, she was a Merrill Lynch 9/11 Survivors Hopes & Dreams Scholar, and an MFA from Columbia University, where she received the Toby Devan Lewis Award. Pamela was a participant in Adidas Group’s Global Footwear Creation Trainee Program. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at MacDowell Colony, Mass MoCA, Bemis Center, Rush Arts Gallery, Mana Contemporary, Catwalk Artist Project, and Wassaic Project. She is a 2017 recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant and a 2018 recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Community Fund Grant.

  • Fountain of Your Youth, 2017, plastic pony beads, 3D printed plastic auger and gears, motor, plastic, fabric, optic yellow tennis ball felt, pool noodles, nylon mesh, sneaker rubber, wood, 55 x 22 x 22 inches

  • Stuck at Mashashimuet Park, 2014, Sag Harbor shells in dime bags stapled onto silk velvet which has been painted, dyed, and burnt-out (devoré) by the artist, sole rubber on foam, iron hooks, hook fastener, backscratcher, brass lamp, earring hooks, patchouli perfume, one-hitter pipe, shine-thru & glow & burns, 84 x 60 x 30 inches
