Education Programs Young Artist Profiles

Previous | Next

What programs were you in and what was your impression of them?
I was in the young adult saturday class at the Joan Mitchell Foundation. My impression of the class was that it didn't cost me anything to attend, and it provided me everything I needed to learn, including learning resources and art supplies.

What influenced you most while in the program?
I was pretty much influenced by my teachers (Lance Paladino and Sarah Wang) and the Student Opportunities & Support Manager José Ortiz because they all shared different art backgrounds, yet I was still able to learn from them. For example: Lance has a graphic design and illustration background, Sarah a painting background and José a fine arts and illustration background. I believe I found them to be good resources because they share my interesst and were open to share their knowledge with me.

What was most challenging?
I believe a challenge for me was pushing myself and my limits, however my teachers help me push certain boundaries.

What advice can you give to other young artists?
Always be willing to teach yourself what you don't know. Nothing is impossible.

What artists are most important to you?
I have garnered my influences from a variety of artists and designers. One of my favorite artist/designers is Craig Mullins, as he has an industrial design and illustration background, which makes his works digital and traditionally exquisite. Other artists and designers important to me are Scott Robertson, John Sargent Singer, Leonardo Davinci, and Feng Zhu.

What are your goals for your future in art?
My goal for my art future is to go into Transportation Design and Entertainment Design, which are interconnected. However, I don't want to be limited to just design art.

What would you say to a young person considering a Joan Mitchell Foundation art program?
Don't think twice about the program, it is free, it provides you with resources and exposure to professional artists.
