My entryway into each new piece is through focusing on the lines and negative space the figure(s) create. This intuitive process allows me to ask questions about the main narrative bit-by-bit: what gestures are the figures invoking, what’s the tone of the setting, what are the objects and atmosphere suggesting. I play with the balance between the calligraphic style of the figurative elements and the detail of the surrounding scene.”
