Joan Mitchell at 100

Throughout 2025, we are celebrating the centennial of Joan Mitchell’s birth with events, announcements, and programs aimed at increasing appreciation and study of the artist’s life and work, as well as amplifying the connections between her legacy and the work of living artists.

Joan Mitchell smiles and holds a cigarette, leaning against a railing, overlooking a lush landscape with trees and the river Seine. She is a white woman in her mid-50s, wearing sunglasses and a loose dress shirt, and has a shoulder length bob.

Centennial Overview

Joan Mitchell was born February 12, 1925, and her impact on the art world continues to resonate over 30 years after her death in 1992. We will commemorate Mitchell’s centennial throughout 2025 with a robust series of programs and events—anchored by presentations of her work in museums around the world—in collaboration with museum partners in the United States and France, where Mitchell lived for much of her life.

This year's festivities include an online class on Mitchell, a lecture series in France, an exhibition at David Zwirner New York, and other programs. The Foundation also will significantly expand the information about Mitchell’s life and creative context made available through its own website and social media, including digitally releasing a documentary film on Mitchell that has been unavailable for many years. Together, these activities will give a wide range of audiences an opportunity to experience her work and learn more about her life, career, and enduring influence. Full listings and details will be added here as they are finalized.

The impact of seeing Mitchell’s paintings in person is truly transformative—in terms of the emotional resonance, scale, colors, and brushwork. For Mitchell's centennial year, which comes on the heels of major traveling exhibitions of her work, we wanted to emphasize the array of Mitchell’s paintings that have found homes in institutions across the US, France, and other locales. The response from museums has been outstanding, and we are thrilled that people in so many communities will have the opportunity to see Mitchell's work in 2025 through their hometown museums.”
