Has her first museum solo exhibition of drawings, “Joan Mitchell: Pastel,” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; shows approximately fifteen large works on paper, all completed during the summer and fall of 1991 in Vétheuil. The exhibition is organized by Klaus Kertess. Joan Mitchell: Pastel, a monograph with an introduction by Klaus Kertess, is published by Robert Miller, New York, in conjunction with the exhibition at the Whitney Museum.
Joan Mitchell by Michel Waldberg, the first monograph in French on the artist, is published by Editions de La Différence, Paris.

Her last collaborative book, Poems, with text by Nathan Kernan and eight color lithographs by the artist, is published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Mount Kisco, New York.
Continuing to work until she is no longer physically able, completes a set of large-scale color lithographs and a final series of color etchings at Tyler Graphics just before her death.
On October 30, Mitchell dies of lung cancer in a Paris hospital.
